The Way (2010) – Movie Review

The Way is a 2010 Movie, based loosely on the experience of Emilio Estevez, who directed the movie and played the role of Daniel Avery, the deceased son of Thomas Avery, who is played by his real father, Martin Sheen.

The movie stage is the Camino of Santiago de Compostela (Way of St. James), where Daniel is killed at the beginning of his journey in the Camino. Martin Sheen’s character goes to the Camino in France to pick the ashes of his son.

In his grieving journey, he decides to walk the Camino of Santiago de Compostela, and complete the journey for his son. In his pilgrimage, he encounters different characters that are also in the journey for different reasons. In a combination of grief, fellowship, spiritual awakenings, they are all looking for a greater meaning in their lives and Thomas’ life changes dramatically throughout his experience.

The Camino of Santiago de Compostela, is a large network of Medieval pilgrimage routes that stretches across different countries in Europe. All these routes come together at the tomb of St. James the Great (Santiago in Spanish) in the city of Santiago de Compostela, north-west Spain.

Walking the Camino could last between 10, 20, or 30 days, based on the route you take and time you have. The purpose of the trip will vary based on personal goals and a beautiful experience to rely on charity to walk the Camino.
